Types of Chemical Peels

TCA Peels
TCA stands for Trichloroacetic Acid. This is a chemical peel that is used in various concentration strengths for progressively stronger effects. The most commonly used strength is 35%.
Dr. Ahmad most commonly uses 35% TCA which will improve the overall skin tone uniformity, remove solar dyschromias (sun spots/freckles), and get rid of fine lines. It can be used on the entire face or applied in select areas such as the crows feet or lower eyelids.
Phenol Peels
Phenol peels are significantly stronger than 35% TCA and can deliver dramatic, long-lasting results. They are highly effective at reducing coarse facial lines and achieving uniform skin tone. Before laser skin resurfacing became popular, phenol peels were considered the gold standard for skin improvement. Many plastic surgeons still believe that phenol peels provide unmatched enhancement and longevity compared to lasers. However, due to their strength, they can cause mild skin bleaching and are not recommended for individuals with darker skin tones. Phenol peels must be performed under monitored IV sedation for safety.

The Chemical Peel Procedure
Prior to undergoing a chemical peel, you may need your skin prepared to accept the peel. This generally consists of pre-treating the skin for a number of weeks with Retin A or AHA creams. Pre-treatment helps to optimize the beneficial effects of the peel.
Chemical peels can often be applied without anesthetic when treating small facial areas, such as the lower eyelids or upper lip. Lighter-strength peels, like those with up to 35% TCA, may cause a mild burning sensation. For full facial resurfacing, sedation is typically required to minimize discomfort. Phenol peels, in particular, are performed under cardiac monitoring due to the potential risk of heart rhythm irregularities during rapid application.
Once sedation is administered (if needed), Dr. Ahmad will cleanse your skin thoroughly. The chemical solution is then applied using a cotton-tipped applicator. With TCA peels, the depth of treatment can be adjusted by mechanically rubbing the solution into the skin. Phenol peels, on the other hand, penetrate the skin to a consistent depth without requiring mechanical modification.

After a full facial peel, you will likely need to avoid social situations for 7–10 days as the treated areas may ooze and form crusts during the healing process. Dr. Ahmad will provide detailed instructions on how to wash and care for your skin daily. Avoiding sun exposure is crucial during the early healing phase, as the sensitive, healing skin is highly prone to severe sunburn. Patients are strongly advised to refrain from tanning for at least six months after undergoing a full facial peel to protect the skin and ensure optimal results.
